Career journey from technology to veterinary medicine to AI research

I started my career as an engineer at Microsoft directly out of high school. I later returned to school, earned a B.S. from Washington State University, and then completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine — also at WSU. Veterinary school taught me physiology, pathology, medicine, and surgery, but it also showed me how much clinical data was being generated and how little of it was being used.

That question led me to the University of Melbourne, where I completed a joint PhD in Natural Language Processing and Veterinary Epidemiology. My research used NLP and machine learning to analyze over 4.4 million veterinary consultation records from 180+ clinics across Australia, helping to inform antimicrobial stewardship programs that combat antibiotic resistance. Along the way, I developed VetBERT, a domain-adapted language model for veterinary clinical text, and published 22+ peer-reviewed papers.

Today I work at the intersection of technology, healthcare, and applied AI. I run Datatroph Solutions, an AI consultancy serving clinical, legal, financial, marketing, and entertainment industries. Our work spans NLP, LLMs, generative AI, diffusion models, and MLOps across AWS, Azure, and GCP. I'm also involved with BioState AI's Omicsweb Copilot, an AI-powered bioinformatics assistant, and I serve as a Machine Learning & Generative AI specialist at PatternWorks.
